Caring for your granite worktops

Granite WorldGranite is a very tough, natural stone. It is beautiful, long lasting and hygienic - ideally suited as worktops for the kitchen and bathrooms.

Because it is waterproof, stain resistant and scratch resistant, in most cases granite will just wipe clean with a damp cloth.

But although granite is tough and easy to look after, it's not indestructible! Here are some guidelines for keeping your granite surfaces in great condition:

  • Granite must not be rubbed with abrasive materials such as metal pads, scouring detergents or alkaline and chlorine based cleaners or bleach. Instead, wash with clean warm soapy water, rinse with clean warm water and dry with a chamois leather or similar.
  • Blot up spills immediately.
  • The highest risk is from highly alkaline or acidic liquids such as lemon juice and or vinegar and substances such as hot oils, wine, detergents, paint stripper, brush cleaner, nail varnish remover or similar products.
  • Use coasters under glasses, particularly those containing alcohol or citrus fruits.
  • Do not place hot items directly on the stone surface. Place mats and coasters should be used under items such as china, ceramics and silver or other objects that could scratch your surfaces.
  • Use chopping boards to help reduce the risk of damage to your surfaces.
  • Avoid standing on your worktops.
  • Do not hit your granite worktops with anything blunt and heavy. It can crack, chip or even break, with the edges most at risk.
